The Centre for Materials Science Research specialises in the production of novel materials, the evaluation of their properties and the modification and characterisation of surfaces for a wide range of applications, academic and industrial.
The Centre brings together an interdisciplinary group of researchers with world-leading experts in polymer technology, surface engineering, microbiology, advanced materials, food technology and dental technology. It provides a forum for unique collaborative research activities within the materials and surface science fields. Staff within the Centre also have strong collaborative relationships with industry and academic groups both within the UK and worldwide.
The university has attracted talented scientists to Materials Science by investing £1.8 million since 2001 in studentships, Research Fellowships and Professorships. It attracted more than £4 million in research income from research councils, government and industry during the same period. The Centre is also a major beneficiary of the £45 million invested in the refurbishment of laboratories and other major facilities at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
The Centre currently has over 30 full-time Masters and Doctorate research students, who are supported by the Faculty Graduate School.
