The School offers a range of degree programmes in Biological, Chemistry , Geographical and Environmental subjects. Individual programmes are designed to provide a rigorous education in the chosen degree with an emphasis on choice and flexibility. All of our degree programmes share the following features:
Our aim is to allow students to follow a degree programme which offers them as wide a choice in topics as possible, while providing a thorough grounding in the chosen subject. First and second year programmes are formed from a combination of core and optional modules. Topic choice for the final year degree programmes is entirely in the student’s hands.
Our degree programmes include full- and part-time options, exchange programmes to North America and Australia, and sandwich year options.
We work hard to maintain a high teaching quality on all our degrees. The school has two Senior Learning and Teaching Fellows amongst its staff and all new staff undertake a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. The University also runs an extensive professional development programme to allow all staff to develop skills throughout their careers.
We believe that the basis for a first-class learning environment is a welcoming and open atmosphere which encourages interaction between all members of the School, whether they are students, support staff, researchers or lecturers. We ensure that teaching sessions are run by an academic staff member, so that students have the benefit of direct contact with an expert in that topic. We encourage students to contact us outside formal sessions if they have any queries.
We use many different approaches to assess performance, with a strong emphasis on coursework, including laboratory and field based assessments.
We believe that the best way to learn about an environment, whether social or physical, is to experience it directly. Consequently, all our Geography and Environmental degree programmes include two core residential field trips, one each in first and second year. The first year trip is located within the British Isles whilst the second year trip takes place in Europe. Both residential trips are heavily subsidised to minimise the cost to the student. In the third year, a range of optional field courses are available. In recent years destinations have included: Norway, Spain, the Kalahari Desert, New York, Belize and Peru.
To help students improve their employability we have a programme of careers talks and events. Students can undertake a sandwich year or short placement and we can help students obtain a place through our extensive links with employers. Our teaching also helps students prepare themselves for the world of work through report writing and problem-based learning.
